Tai has a BFA in Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Tai Lum grew up in San Francisco, studying at the San Francisco Ballet School, LINES Ballet Teen Company, and the ODC Dance Jam. Tai went to high school at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.
Tai believes above all else in the culmination of different subjects, to build and support a practice. Always taking notes to weave concepts of Math, Science, Philosophy, History, and more into their art. Tai’s core values are: professionalism, collaboration, and kindness.
Tai believes storytelling to be the most important part of an artistic work. They consider every aspect of a project; relating it back to the story at hand. However, their priority is fun. If the dancers or collaborators are not having a good time, the piece will not be successful. Tai ensures that everyone is heard in the process, so that they feel confident and comfortable in Tai’s space.
The Dance Ranch is a philosophy that centers around artistically “living off of the land.” I believe that art is harvested from the universe through lived experience, not generated by an artist. We get inspired by others and we inspire others. All ideas are shared and no idea is original. We take from the land, and we give back to the land. "The Dance Ranch" philosophy is a cycle that I try to constantly integrate in my art, and my life.
