Tai Lum

Tai Lum was born and raised in San Francisco, receiving training at SFB, Lines, and ODC. Tai received their BFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Tai was a part of the Second Avenue Dance Company, performing works by Andrea Miller and Jose Limon. Since moving back to the Bay Area in 2025, Tai has performed with Robert Moses’ Kin, Iris Collective, and Tether Dance Project.

Personal Philosophy

Tai is currently interested in this growing wave of “human movement”: How to dance and interact with the physical world from a raw and simple nature. Tai wants to explore our animalistic patterns and pathways. With minimalist styles, pedestrian gestures, and breaking stillness, Tai wants to represent a pure human without any training, technique, or even experience in the world. Tai is fascinated by many subjects, weaving concepts of Math, Science, and Philosophy into their art practice. Tai’s core values are: professionalism, collaboration, and kindness.

Teaching Philosophy

Tai believes that the standard class structure of warm up and learning a combo is outdated. Tai’s classes take on a “workshop style" approach. Every few weeks the class focus moves beyond learning choreography. Sequencing, Ideation, Focus, Details, Kinematic Awareness, and more are all under Tai's teaching model. Tai’s priority is fun. If the students are not having a good time, they will not grow. Tai ensures that everyone is heard in the process so that they feel confident and comfortable in Tai’s space.
